The first step in the Self Therapy for Stutters from the Stuttering Foundation of America is to "Make a habit of always talking slowly and deliberately whether you stutter or not." As a person who stutters your speech is not always consistent, sometimes its fluent and at the same tempo, other times its jolted and full of repetitions and blocks. Some people who stutter also rush through sentences.

The aim here is not to stop stuttering and speak fluently, but rather to continue stuttering in a smoother, gentler fashion. For example instead of having a hard block on a word, rather stutter through it.
