The first step in the Self Therapy for Stutters from the Stuttering Foundation of America is to "Make a habit of always talking slowly and deliberately whether you stutter or not." As a person who stutters your speech is not always consistent, sometimes its fluent and at the same tempo, other times its jolted and full of repetitions and blocks. Some people who stutter also rush through sentences.

This point helps you become more aware of your speech and try to talk in a more regular (not necessarily fluent) manner. Also stuttering and fluency oscillates, for no particular reason a person who stutters may experience an hour, day, week or even month of fluency and then bump into a friend at the shops and battle to say a word. By always talking slowly and deliberately this helps speech to be more consistent.

For me personally this point helps me to maintain the right frame of mind when it comes to talking. In the passed I would be 'surprised' by needing to talk and then stumble through my words.
